If you're interested in becoming part of our team, this page is for you.
The world's first national park was Yellowstone in the US. Ferdinand Hayden was instrumental in securing its protection. His dad was an alcoholic and died when he was 10, and his mother abandoned him. He went to work on his uncle's farm. When he turned 18, he packed his few belongings and walked 300 miles to an education college in Ohio. He said: "I don't have any money but, if you enrol me, I intend to change the world for the better." If you can relate to him wanting to make a difference, then today's pioneering challenge is to sort out the human mentality or attitude to life. It's both the fundamental cause of our problems but also the solution to them - the key to the way forwards.
We are only interested in people who really want to give and do what is needed. We don't take on casual volunteers who want to do a little bit when it suits them.
Previous conservation experience is unnecessary as we provide all necessary training.
This is a potentially life-changing opportunity to make a dream of helping wildlife come true. But it needs a serious attitude and step-by-step commitment.
We don't limit team members to specific roles, but instead train them to do whatever is needed to run our nature reserves. The jobs are many and varied. Read the website pages again for The Oasis and Komsberg to see what's going on, then imagine yourself helping to make this all happen.
Haywards Heath is our main railway station (on the London to Brighton line) closest to The Oasis and we can pick you up from here to attend workdays if you don't have your own transport.
Looking further ahead, a range of abilities are needed to manage our project work both here in the UK and in South Africa.
We have a long history of working non-paid. We are highly effective and efficient, working to high standards.
Obviously, we have other jobs to financially support ourselves. Flexible paid work is nowadays easy to get or arrange. And when you're busy doing what you find meaningful, you spend less time and money distracting yourself from the drudgery of the rat race.
We appreciate that life in modern society is demanding and time-consuming. Therefore, we will try to be as flexible as possible to help you make a transition to working with us. We have two regular workdays a week at The Oasis: Wednesdays and Sundays. The minimum initial commitment we require is one day a week.
Disappointed over many years with how charities usually operate, we have pioneered a "third way". We have combined the best of the old-fashioned volunteer spirit with the more modern professional idea. Working as non-paid professionals really works. And it saves a lot of money to buy land for nature, fencing materials, etc, that would otherwise have been wasted on paying ourselves!
How we work obviously isn't for everyone. If you believe all the marketing hype that "You're worth it" or "You deserve it", then no doubt you won't have seen the limitations of the "me, me, me" mentality. We are interested in individuals who really want to give. We are proud to be different.
Before applying, make sure you've carefully read "The key to our success" page. And, if you haven't already done so, follow the link to our "sister" charity: www.thehumanpotentialtrust.org, and make sure that you are familiar with it all.
